Last Thursday I had the pleasure of joining the design and branding agency Contagious for their Applied dreaming event at the Biscuit Factory in Edinburgh; and dreamy it was. The top floor of the warehouse was filled with impossibly brilliant concept sketches, slick motion pieces, interactive typography, collections of eclectic memorabilia and old mobile phone hand sets and even the parts of a car in the process of being lovingly refurbished downed the concrete floor of this edgy venue. Each small exhibition was put together by a different member of the Contagious team, giving us an insight into their passions within and out with their creative careers.
Another reason for the event was also a scouting mission of sorts. Contagious was looking to meet potential new interns for this year by form of speed dating. Myself and four other students from DJCAD where informed at the start of the week of this event and advised that we should ‘bring something along for our speed daters to remember us by’. Of course panic ensued as the 5 of us tried to come up with witty, memorable bits and pieces to leave behind. One of the boys taking his main influence from the theme itself decided to create a condom branded with his face in the hope that he’ll ‘get lucky’.
I decided after much deliberation that I wanted to leave something that I could interact with throughout the 5 minute speed date. So I came up with a fortune teller . . . if nothing else it takes everyone back to their school days. On it I printed questions and answers about my self, and after the first few dates I got the hang of using my prop as an aid to conversation. I can only apologise about the first clumsy attempts during the beginning ! Luckily enough the room was so loud hopefully if I said anything silly no one actually heard me . . .
It was wonderful to meet the team from Contagious and such a great way to conduct a first interview (chat, they were all so nice!)
Thanks for having us!
